Article Abstract:
Research describing the use of negative binomial distribution for counts of biological populations is presented. In particular the method is applied to counts of female grizzly bears in the Yellowstone ecosystem.

Components of grizzly bear habitat selection: density, habitats, roads, and mortality risk
Article Abstract:
The article discusses about the data collected from bears on a rolling plateau where a large portion of the landscape had been modified by human activities and data from bears in mountain areas largely inaccessible to humans.

Influence of habitat abundance and fragmentation on northern spotted owls in western Oregon
Article Abstract:
The management of northern spotted owl populations relies on the assumption that juvenile dispersal of owls is linked to the size and isolation of habitat, which is seen as a determining factor in the future existence of the species in the Pacific Northwest. A new study of spotted owl sites in western Oregon investigates the influences of landscape pattern and habitat conditions on spotted-owl occupancy and reproductive rates. The study finds that forest fragmentation is not linked to lower reproduction or occupancy rates among northern spotted owls, while site selection is not affected by habitat fragmentation.
