In a state of shock
Article Abstract:
The Southern California Earthquake Center (SCEC) is the agency responsible for informing the public of earthquake hazard. Because of the rising population in California and the heightened probability of a large earthquake within the next 25 years, the SCEC has become more visible to the public. Among its initiatives is strengthening links with the media and setting up the Caltech-US Geological Survey Broadcast of Epicenters at the Caltech University. As a result of SCEC's efforts, the human risks associated with earthquakes are decreasing.

A circle of fire
Article Abstract:
The current recession has forced the Los Angeles County Museum to search for funding from the private sector. In addition to this, the museum has cut back $2.2-million from its annual budget of $21-million, and a third of its staff of 157 have been either retired or laid off. Amidst all these financial problems, the museum's location also makes it vulnerable to the social problems which sparked the 1992 Los Angeles riots. The museum's survival thus depends on its financial viability and the good relations it keeps with the community.
