Interest ferments in yeast genome sequence
Article Abstract:
The European-led consortium of 96 laboratories involved in the Yeast Genome Project has released the complete sequence of the genome of the yeast Saccharomyces cervisiae. The yeast genome consists of 12.06 million bases and 6000 genes, and is around 250 times smaller than the human genome. The yeast genome exhibits a high level of homology with the human genome, which will help in the progress of the understanding of the human genome. The European Union is assisting in the sequencing of Schizosaccharomyces pombe, a yeast which contains only three chromosomes.

French genome pioneer goes private
Article Abstract:
The French genome scientist Daniel Cohen reportedly plans to announce his resignation from the director's post of the Centre d'Etudes du Polymorphisme Humain (CEPH), and to combine his research group with Genset. Genset plans to develop a comprehensive approach to genomics ranging from research to drugs with the arrival of Cohen. Genset will use gene identification to develop small-molecule therapeutics. CEPH will not continue genetic mapping after Cohen's departure, but will research disease susceptibility through gene identification by way of mapping.

Mouse genome roars ahead with new map
Article Abstract:
Issues concerning the sequencing of the mouse genome are discussed. The assembly of the entire mouse genome is expected to proceed rapidly as a physical map of the genome is now available at the Ensembl database.
