Italian science gains budget boost, still awaits reform
Article Abstract:
Italy's budget for FY 1996-1997 spared the science ministry from financial cuts and even awarded it an increase. The draft bill proposes to raise the budget for the national research council by 5%, part of which will be used to support its plans to relocate several research groups to new facilities and to finance new technology transfer programs. Another beneficiary of the increased budget for research is the Italian Space Agency, which is predicted to receive an increase ranging from 850 billion to 950 billion Italian lira.

New biology institute in Milan prizes quality above loyalty in effort to become world-class
Article Abstract:
The Dibit Institute in Milan, Italy is a new $7.5 million facility for biological research that is intended to put Italian research on a par with the efforts of other Western countries. Dibit's first director, Jacopo Meldolesi, hopes to achieve a high standard of research by basing appointments on demonstrated excellence rather than on seniority and loyalty as has traditionally been done in Italian science. Meldolesi plans to increase the number of scientists at Dibit to 200 by 1994.

Italy pursues cuts in manned space efforts
Article Abstract:
The Italian Space Agency proposes to limit its role in the space programs of the European Space Agency (ESA) in an effort to set right its own financial status. Italy's move will prevent ESA from securing funds from its member states for its proposed $4.8 billion manned space flight program that is already under criticism by Germany and France.
