Reviews of UK university research 'have helped to raise standards'
Article Abstract:
The results of the fourth research assessment exercise of British universities reveal a significant increase in the overall quality of research compared to 1992. Using a complex and codified set of assessment techniques, each university department was reviewed by a panel of experts and rated. There has been some dissatisfaction with some results but overall the reviews motivated universities to increase their scores by selectively recruiting talented individuals at inflated salaries. Ultimately, the United Kingdom is benefiting from the quality of university research.

Wake-up call for Japan's genomics
Article Abstract:
The announcement by Celera Genomics that it plans to sequence the whole rice genome in only six weeks has presented a significant challenge to the international Rice Genome Sequencing Project. Japanese researchers working on this project had planned to complete it in 2008, but they may now have to consider revising their plans. They are already looking at ways of speeding up their sequencing work, and have called for increased funding to buy DNA sequencers.
