Japan science head in move to limit decision-making role of officials
Article Abstract:
The dismissal of the secretary general of Japan's Science and Technology Agency (STA) by the agency's head Makiko Tanaka marked the end of the role of senior officials in decision-making associated with government-funded research. The dismissal was triggered by a disagreement over reforming semi-government research and development organizations belonging to the STA. The move will affect the relations between the ruling party and the bureaucracy, whereby the ruling party had granted senior officials with decision-making role in return for staying in power.

Japan seeks funding for new drilling ship
Article Abstract:
Japan's Ocean Drilling in the 21st Century programme could include the construction of a new deep-drilling ship. The project, which has gained approval from earth scientists and deep-sea drilling engineers from across the world, would involve the use of riser technology. This involves enclosing the drilling stem in a rigid pipe which would rise off the sea floor in water up to 2,500 mt deep. The project will only go ahead if funds are made available by the members of the international Ocean Drilling Program.
