Japan's research institutes face cuts in maintenance budgets
Article Abstract:
The Japanese government is continuing to increase its investment in science and technology. However, research institutes are set to suffer a reduction in maintenance budgets, and they are being forced to plan cost-cutting initiatives in order to limit damage to their research projects. Some government-linked science ministries and agencies have been able to maintain growth in their overall funding by developing special accounts that function separately from the general account. However, national institutes are unable to allocate these budgets to maintenance costs.

Japan split over US aid for spy satellites
Article Abstract:
Japan is debating whether it should seek technical help from the US over plans for four reconnaissance satellites. The satellites will improve the country's capabilities in security information gathering, and the LDP is calling for US assistance. However, the government feels satellites should be developed at home using technology already used on current satellites.
