Just out of pigtails
Article Abstract:
A rich topological structure can be gleaned from the space-time diagrams of the motion of beads drifting in a magnetized fluid. An experiment by Pieranski et al. involved non-magnetic spherical beads placed in a thin layer of fluid with iron particles, with a rotating magnetic fluid setting the fluid in motion. The beads were observed to act like magnetic holes and interact with one another in simple but nonlinear equations. With the two-dimensional motion of a bead represented as a curve in a three-dimensional space-time diagram, a number of beads in motion reveal a set of braided curves.

Nanometre-scale rolling and sliding of carbon nanotubes
Article Abstract:
Surface force apparatus (SFA) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) have been used to explore the microscopic aspects of tribology, identifying dependence of sliding friction on contact area. AFM was used to manipulate multiwall carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and sliding and rolling were observed. The evidence for sliding and rolling consisted of topographical image sequences of manipulated nanotubes, as well as lateral force data collected to measure energy loss.

Dante's insight into galilean invariance
Article Abstract:
Galileo's fellow countryman Dante Alighieri in his book 'The Divine Comedy' has intuitively grasped the concept of invariance. The principle of invariance was explained in detail by Galileo in 1632.
