Keeping faith in gene manipulation
Article Abstract:
Elimination of the Recombinant DNA Advisory committee of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) may pose a difficulty in maintaining public trust due to a lack of public scrutiny of gene-therapy research. Transferring the committee's regulatory duties to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the monitoring of research to a smaller advisory committee needs to be done in a manner that makes it possible to maintain the links between the FDA and NIH. If the functions of the original committee are maintained, and the public is allowed to scrutinize the the new committee, public trust can be maintained.

High-resolution structure of a DNA helix forming (C.G)*G base triplets
Article Abstract:
High-resolution structural data for triple helices is scarce and so the X-ray analysis of a DNA nonamer, d(GCGAATTCG), to a resolution of 2.05 angstroms can provide essential information. The analyzed crystal structure included triple helix fragments that were (C.G)*G triplets with guanosine-carrying chains in a parallel orientation. Homologous recombination models, where one length of DNA is replaced by a similar sequence, require the triplet arrangement while the observed structure matches many triplex organization forecasts.
