Kin recognition pheromones in social wasps: combining chemical and behavioural evidence
Article Abstract:
Certain cuticular hydrocarbons related with recognition pheromones mediate kin recognition in social wasps, Polistes fuscatus. Pheromones mediating kin recognition do not differ between the foundresses and workers of a colony as recognition pheromones are specific to each colony. Methyl-branched alkane pheromones are specific to a colony while straight-chain alkane pheromones are less specific to a colony. Wasps use more than a few pheromones to discriminate between nieces.

Recognition of competitive asymmetries reduces the severity of fighting in male Idarnes fig wasps
Article Abstract:
Wingless males of nonpollinating Idarnes fig wasps, is studied and assessment display and defensive behavior during the mating period are observed. Results are consistent with models of asymmetric contest competition and suggest that defensive behavior and particular internal features may increase the importance of the recognition of competitive asymmetries in reducing the severity of fighting in closed systems.
