Migration threatens to send flu south
Article Abstract:
Researchers fear that the deadly H5N1 bird flu virus is expected to be carried by migratory birds and the next stop is Africa, which is on the main migratory route for birds. The impact in Africa, would be dramatically different from Europe, as rural communities around the lakes of the Rift Valley region depend heavily on poultry to survive, and live in close contact with both domestic and migratory birds, and hence African countries should be given international assistance to help them look out for virus and control outbreaks.

When the tail wags the dog
Article Abstract:
Flagella are whip-like structures that power the movement of certain cells and analysis of single-cell parasite, the African trypanosome, reveals that flagella are also essential for viability in this organism. This will help in developing therapies against African sleeping sickness, the fatal disease caused by these parasites.
