African 'flexibility' may open path to biosafety agreement
Article Abstract:
A United Nations conference has opened in Cartagena, Colombia in order to reach a global protocol on the safety of genetically modified organisms. The African group may compromise on insisting that exporters must have consent from the importing country prior to shipping genetically modified materials. The Miami group of countries, including the US, Canada and other large agriculture want a protocol restricted to trade in live genetically modified organisms.

World Bank invests in global science base
Article Abstract:
The World Bank is moving the focus of its activities towards support for knowledge development including science. The bank is owned by 180 governments and a quarter of its lending is interest-free, going to the poorest countries. It believes that developing countries must build up knowledge based industries to remain competitive, and it is already funding an information technology infrastructure programme called infoDev, in Africa.
