Local inhibition and long-range enhancement of Dpp signal transduction by Sog
Article Abstract:
The Short gastrulation (Sog) protein has been proposed to form an inhibitory complex with either Decapentaplegic (Dpp) or the related Screw ligand, processed by protease Tld. Sog seems to be necessary for amnioserosa formation. The misexpression of sog using the even-skipped strip-2 enhancer is found to redistribute Dpp signalling in a mutant background where dp is expressed in the embryo. The tethered Sog is found to suppress local Dpp activity, without increasing Dpp activity at a distance.

Stochastic resonance in non-dynamical systems without response thresholds
Article Abstract:
A class of non-dynamical and threshold-free systems are shown to also exhibit stochastic resonance, the phenomenon wherein the addition of noise can enhance the ability to transfer information reliably. A general mathematical model for these systems is presented, wherein a sequence of pulses is generated at random with a probability which depends exponentially on an input. Additive noise is observed to stimulate an increase in the output signal-to-noise ratio as the level of noise increases.

Noise-induced enhancement of signal transduction across voltage-dependent ion channels
Article Abstract:
The phenomenon of stochastic resonance is analyzed in ion channels that are formed by the polypeptide alamethicin and are characterized by voltage dependence. Such resonance demonstrates one way whereby noise, which usually causes transmission inefficiency, can actually enhance performance. Results of investigation show that an increase of 100% was achieved in signal transduction.
