Looking inside quantum dots
Article Abstract:
The spectra of quantum dots, also called artificial atoms, can be determined by analyzing the small electric current that moves through the dot as a single electron joins or departs from it. This new method of measuring the dots' spectra, devised by R.C. Ashoori and colleagues, depends on the two-dimensional nature of the dots' electronic states. The dots are confined by planar potential-energy barriers in the semiconductor structures of which they are a part, thus forcing the electrons to travel freely in two directions only.

Observation of 'scarred' wavefunctions in a quantum well with chaotic electron dynamics
Article Abstract:
Tunnel-current spectroscopy used to determine the quantum-mechanical energy levels of an electron in a quantum well in a magnetic field indicates the presence of concentrations of probability amplitude (wavefunction scarring). The experimental observations confirm the theoretical calculations. The spectra of the quantized energy levels, for systems that show chaotic motion, are not uniform and have fluctuations that are related to unstable periodic orbits. The orbits resemble scars in the wavefunction of the system.

Floating gold in cryogenic oxygen
Article Abstract:
The upward force exerted by the magnetic field decreases when the body is immersed in a cold oxygen gas. The greater buoyancy provided by the liquid oxygen is evaluated through some experiments and the results are provided.
