MITI clears new path for Japan's universities
Article Abstract:
The affiliation of the New Energy and Industrial Technology Organization with the Ministry of International Trade and Industry in Jul 1995, will enable Japanese universities to receive research funds without interference from the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture. Research institutes and universities will receive the independent grants in September after the projects have been reviewed by a committee. However, critics of the new policy say that only an open competitive system possibly even involving foreign researchers will help university research.
