Regulation by insulin of a unique neuronal Ca2+ pool and of neuropeptide secretion
Article Abstract:
Insulin triggers a sharp rise in intracellular Ca2+ concentration in the bag cell neurons of Aplysia as well as release of neuropeptide. These effects take place without triggering spontaneous action potentials. Insulin stimulates the release of Ca2+ at the distal tips of neurites, which is the site where neuropeptide secretion is presumed to occur. Results suggest that Ca2+ release from a unique intracellular pool may be a contributory factor to neuropeptide secretion in the absence of neuronal discharge.

A minK-HERG complex regulates the cardiac potassium current/kr
Article Abstract:
MinK is a protein governing ion channel activation, the function and structure of ion conduction pathways and regulation via second messengers. The human homologue HERG of a fruitfly gene encodes a protein producing a rapidly activating cardiac delayed rectifer, I kr. Experiments show that a stable complex is formed by HERG and minK, regulating I kr activity and thus important in the control of heart rate and rhythm.

A new family of outwardly rectifying potassium channel proteins with two pore domains in tandem
Article Abstract:
TOK1, a unique potassium channel found in Saccharomyces cerevisiae has two P domains within one continuous polypeptide and acts as an outwardly rectifying channel. The activation of TOK1 is coupled to the equilibrium potential. Differences in structure and functional properties of the channel with respect to other potassium channels are discussed.
