Making partnerships work
Article Abstract:
The Universities of Oxford and Cambridge have each formed beneficial ties with the pharmaceutical industry, but each has gone about it in different and original ways. Oxford and the US company Squibb formed a partnership in which the company committed 20 million pounds to fund neuropharmacological research over seven years. Glaxo came to an agreement with Cambridge in which it funds the Glaxo Institute of Applied Pharmacology there with a budget of 16 million pounds over 10 years. The main difference is that company scientists work directly with academics at Cambridge while at Oxford they do not.

Biotech companies rescue Italian vaccine institute

Biocine Co, a joint venture of the biotechnology firms Ciba-Geigy Corp and Chiron Corp, bought the Sclavo Research Institute, Italy's best known center for vaccine development. Biocine paid $62 million for the institute, which is located in Siena and has been renamed the Immunobiological Research Institute Siena (IRIS). Ciba-Geigy and Chiron undertook the purchase to increase their share of the pediatric vaccine market. To help achieve this goal, IRIS will introduce two new vaccines by 1993: one against the Hemophilus influenza B virus and the other against the recombinant pertussis toxin.
