Manipulations of signalling environment affect male competitive success in three-spined sticklebacks
Article Abstract:
The relationship between male coloration and fighting ability was analyzed in adult male Gastroerosteus aculeatus L. during the breeding period to characterize the mechanisms that mediate male-male competitive interactions. Analysis of stickle back male-male competitive interactions in a neutral territory indicated the significant effect of male color expression on competitive success. Furthermore, the red belly coloration of male sticklebacks during breeding functioned as a threat display that discourages territorial intrusions.

Manipulations of fundamental and formant frequencies influence the attractiveness of human male voices
Article Abstract:
Fundamental frequencies and apparent vocal tract lengths of young adult male voices, both independently and simultaneously are manipulated and their impact on female ratings of masculinity, size, age and attractiveness is assessed. Lowering the fundamental frequencies and/or increasing apparent vocal tract lengths of male voices increased females' ratings of the masculinity, size and age of the speaker.
