Marine litter keeps increasing
Article Abstract:
Surveys of litter washed up on Inaccessible Island in the south Atlantic Ocean from 1984 to 1990 reveals that marine litter has increased exponentially over that period. The litter is mainly plastic and most of the identifiable pieces were from South America. The agreement of countries responsible for most of the world's shipping to the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships which went into effect in 1988 evidently had little or no effect on observed litter.

Iodine oxide in the marine boundary layer
Article Abstract:
Iodine oxide was detected in the boundary layer at Mace Head, Ireland in May 1997, suggesting that iodine chemistry occurs in the troposphere. IO produces O(sub2) and halogen atoms when reacting with itself or with halogen oxides BrO and C1O. IO can have a major impact on the boundary-layer photochemistry at levels of 6 p.p.t., and further investigations will establish the conditions that result in IO.

The work keeps turning
Article Abstract:
Animal development studies using the roundworm Caenorhabditis elgans demonstrate that mutant roundworm embryos with massive lineage defects occur when the gene lit-1 is eliminated. Daughter cells following defective cell-division transform from a posterior to anterior fate and develop into organisms with no intestine. Evidence suggests that lit-1 may be involved in phylum-specific development control.
