Mate, neighbour and stranger songs: a female song sparrow perspective
Article Abstract:
Female song sparrows, Melospiza melodia, respond more strongly to songs recorded from their mates, according to research into discrimination by female song sparrows between categories of male song. It appears that female song sparrows are able to recognize individual males by the song types in their repertoires. It can therefore be stated that female song sparrows have recognition abilities similar to those already seen in male song sparrows. Females responded more to stranger songs that were similar to song types in their mates' repertoires than to song types that were dissimilar.

Sexual preferences for mate song types in female song sparrows
Article Abstract:
The influence of male song sparrows on the female singing was analyzed to characterize the mechanisms of copulation solicitation displays in songbirds. Analysis of female sparrow singing patterns indicated the role of mate song types in enhancing the intensity of female songs. Female song sparrows were also stimulated to perform sexual displays when presented with song types from the repertoires of mates than songs from other males in the local population.
