Melting dynamics of a plasma crystal
Article Abstract:
Monolayers and 3D plasma crystals were produced to study their melting dynamics. Plasma crystal structures were visualized by illuminating the lattice layers with a sheet of laser light and viewing with a charge-coupled device camera normal to the sheet. An unexpected vibrational phase was encountered during melting which could suggest the presence of a new intermediate state in melting transitions.

Ultrafast relaxation in water
Article Abstract:
Woutersen and Bakker used two 200-fs infrared pulses to excite OH groups. Thin layer samples of either pure water or a mixture of HDO and D2O, enabled measurements of the dependence of the energy transfer rate on the OH concentration. The rotational anisotropy of the molecules were measured as a function of the time delay between pump and probe.
