Modest increases prevail in Japanese budget bids
Article Abstract:
Japanese science agencies are seeking modest increases in budget in 1988, knowing there will be no further support from the finance ministry for sharp rises. The Ministry for International Trade and Industry (MITI) is seeking a rise of around 5%, with the Science and Technology Agency (STA) seeking just 1.4%. The STA is planning to establish a genome research centre within the Institute for Physical and Chemical Research, as part of plans to combine research support schemes information technology, life sciences and environmental science.

Japanese industry fights budget setback
Article Abstract:
The Japanese government has announced budget cuts which will impact the country's role in the ITER nuclear reactor international research programme. Dismayed scientists had hoped that the country would host the ITER reactor within the next three years. However, fewer public research grants will now be allocated in an effort to focus on efficient design and development processes. Japan will commit to the project eventually, say representatives from the Science and Technology Agency.
