Museum studies measure FA
Article Abstract:
Precautions and data analysis mechanisms are used in all studies of fluctuating asymmetry. Population, site and year differences can be teased out statistically if the proper information is available, but this is rarely performed in uncontrolled field studies and museum collections. A combination of between-population differences in optimal trait size, level of developmental homeostasis or post-developmental viability selection generates clear correlation of asymmetry with trait size including zero. Discriminating between the many reputed costs is an important research goal.

Experimental design and the signalling properties of fluctuating asymmetry
Article Abstract:
Several experimental designs were proposed for addressing the problems associated with fluctuating asymmetry measurements of developmental instability signalling characteristics. The proposed experimental designs, however, fail to solve symmetry signalling properties from certain extraneous factors. Further studies should focus on the lower perceptual thresholds that influence fluctuating asymmetry signalling to determine an organisms ability to identify minute asymmetries.

The biological relevance of testing for perfect symmetry
Article Abstract:
Pomory argues that research into asymmetry should examine deviations from perfect symmetry in data. He sees such testing as biologically significant but there are grounds for doubting that this is the case. There is no such thing as total lack of asymmetry and there will always be some degree of measurement error. It could be misleading to make a prior test for asymmetry and such testing does not represent an advance on previous guidelines.
