Mutations in the hepatocyte nuclear factor-1-alpha gene in maturity-onset diabetes of the young (MODY3)
Article Abstract:
Mutations in the gene encoding hepatocyte nuclear factor (HNF)-1-alpha leads to maturity-onset diabetes of the young (MODY)-3 form of non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM). HNF-1-alpha is a transcription factor responsible for tissue-specific control of the liver gene expression. HNF-1-alpha also works as a transactivator of the insulin-I gene in rats. Acquired defects in the HNF-1-alpha gene lead to beta-cell dysfunction and thus, may contribute to the late-onset forms of NIDDM.

Mutations in the hepatocyte nuclear factor-4-alpha gene in maturity-onset diabetes of the young (MODY1)
Article Abstract:
The disease maturity-onset diabetes of the young (MODY) is a form of non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus and may result from the MODY1 gene mutation. MODY1 is the gene which is responsible for encoding the hepatocyte nuclear factor (HNF)-4 alpha. HNF-4 alpha is a part of the steroid/thyroid hormone receptor family and is responsible for the regulation of the HNF-1 alpha expression. HNF-1 alpha is a transcription factor involved in the control of liver genes in specific tissues.

An expression of interest
Article Abstract:
The baseline level of gene expression between people varies. The answer to how this is genetically determined would provide an improvement in the understanding of complex traits, including some genetic diseases.
