NCAR under fire, a victim of its own success
Article Abstract:
The National Science Foundation (NSF) admonished the managers of the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) to change objectionable funding and growth policies. The NSF called on the University Consortium for Atmospheric Research (UCAR), which is contracted to manage the NCAR, to heed the complaints of atmospheric scientists that the NCAR is neglecting to fund their work. Three issues prompted criticism of UCAR and NCAR: the doubling of NCAR's funding from sources other than the NSF; NCAR's lack of spending on shared facilities; and excessive growth that has blurred NCAR's original mission.

Search for contaminant in EMS outbreak goes slowly
Article Abstract:
Researchers have so far failed to identify the contaminant of the dietary supplement L-tryptophan that caused the flare-up of eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome (EMS) in the US in 1989 and 1990. The outbreak of EMS, a blood disorder, afflicted over 1,500 people of whom at least 27 died. L-tryptophan, an amino acid produced by the Japanese firm Showa Denko, is used as therapy for insomnia, depression and other disorders. Researchers have found that the EMS cases did not result from a single contaminant of L-tryptophan as they expected. Researchers have accused Showa Denko of hampering their efforts.
