NMFS - a partner for endangered species
Article Abstract:
The National Marine Fisheries Service, a partner agency of the Fish and Wildlife Service, is tasked with identifying and protecting threatened marine and anadromous species. Cetaceans, seals, sea turtles, sea lions, and marine plants are among the species listed under its Candidate Species List. Its responsibilities under the Endangered Species Act also include the designation of critical habitat, implementation of recovery plans and enforcement of legal protection. It works alongside government agencies, Native American tribes and the private sector in its conservation efforts.
