Name that tune
Article Abstract:
The study conducts a research that provides insights into how auditory memories are formed under species-specific constraints, and how those memories help to guide song development using white-crowned sparrows. It concluded that for white-crowned sparrows, the acquired template represents sequence information that the minimal information for identifying a sequence of appropriate length is sufficient to describe song and that environmentally supplied sequence information can overcome the innate tendency to start songs with whistles.

Neuronal populations and single cells representing learned auditory objects
Article Abstract:
The first example of neurons selective for learned conspecific vocalizations in adult animals, in starlings that re trained to recognize conspecific songs is presented. Based on recognition training contingencies the neuronal population is found in a non-primary forebrain auditory region, exhibits increased responses to the set of learned songs compared with novel songs and present differential responses to categories of learned songs.

Recursive syntactic pattern learning by songbirds
Article Abstract:
The European starlings accurately recognize acoustic patterns defined by a recursive, self-embedding, context-free grammar. They are also able to classify new patterns defined by the grammar and reliably exclude agrammatical patterns and this finding opens a new range of complex syntactic processing mechanisms to physiological investigation.
