National vandalism at the U.S. geological survey
Article Abstract:
The United States Geological Survey faces a slow and imminent deterioration as the 20 percent reduction of staff in its Geological Division compounded by the proposed 50 percent reduction in library's acquisition budget confirm an internal issue of mismanagement problem. This begins to stir hostile reactions from the public, academic institutions, industrial, and regional agencies who largely benefit from the library's resource and appeals to the government to save it from extinction by offering full subsidy as well as acknowledging it as a national library.

Putting nuclear-test monitoring to the test
Article Abstract:
A network of seismological stations is being established as part of the International Monitoring System to verify the Comprehensive Test Ban by monitoring low-magnitude disturbances. The underground firing of conventional explosives at Degelen Mountain in eastern Kazakhstan in Aug 1998 offered an opportunity to assess this network. It has been shown that explosions with yields considerably below 1 kilotonne can be recognized as suspicious. It is clear that it would prove difficult to undertake a clandestine test.
