Nesting biology of mallards in California
Article Abstract:
Mallard production in California is greater than what was earlier reported and its reproductive characteristics vary from what have been seen at northern breeding grounds. This was proven through an examination of mallard nesting biology in some wetland areas in California from 1985 to 1989, namely, Suisun Marsh, the Central Valley and the intermountain region of Northeastern California. In the study that involved 3,903 mallard nests, total nest success was placed at 32.3% as clutch size decreased from 10.3 eggs to 6.9 eggs over a three-month period.

Cues for investment: nest desertion in response to partial clutch depredation in dabbling ducks
Article Abstract:
The nest desertion in response to natural clutch reductions that help predator to determine which of several cues female dabbling ducks use to assess offspring values is examined. The result of the examination indicates that several factors influence clutch value and that ducks are able to use multiple cues following partial clutch depredation.

The influence of partial clutch depredation on duckling production
Article Abstract:
Research shows that although duck populations in California's Suisun Marsh region experience partial egg-clutch loss through depredation, they still make a substantial contribution to overall duckling population survival. Nest success is linked to whether or not the female abandons the clutch after egg depredation.
