Nesting ecology of boreal forest birds following a massive outbreak of spruce beetles

Article Abstract:

Breeding dark-eyed juncos, yellow-rumped warblers, and spruce-nesting birds are studied in forests with different levels of spruce mortality following an outbreak of spruce beetles in Alaska, USA. It is seen that yellow-rumped warblers nested exclusively in spruce, but success did not change with spruce mortality, and testing warblers switched from selecting forest patches with high densities of live white spruce to patches with beetel-killed spruce with the increase in disturbance.

Variability in colony attendance of crevice-nesting horned puffins: Implications for population monitoring

Article Abstract:

The variability in colony attendance of horned puffins at five breeding colonies in the North Pacific was studied to assess whether variation in count data can be reduced to a level that would allow one to detect changes in the number of birds attending a colony. The findings suggested that the relationship between count data and breeding population size needs more study before the number of birds present at the colony could be used with confidence as an index of population trend.

Lesser scaup nest success and duckling survival on the Yukon flats, Alaska

Article Abstract:

Nest success and duckling survival of lesser scaup were estimated over 3 field seasons on the Yukon Flats National Wildlife Refuge in northeastern Alaska, USA. The estimates, which were the lowest ever reported for ducks nesting at northern latitudes, serve the purpose of improved conservation of scaup.
