Weather forecasters that sell forecasts with claims of impressive accuracy, but have no apparent scientific basis are proliferating in Europe and the United States as various industries demand increasingly accurate information about the weather. Royal Meteorological Society has decided to develop an accepted set of metrics with which to rate the accuracy of different forecasting firms as rise of private forecasters could affect the reputation of their trade.

Forces gather behind proposal for a natural-disaster agency
Article Abstract:
A plan for an international body that would coordinate preparations for natural disasters is being developed following the recent tsunami in the Indian Ocean. The United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (ISDR), based in Geneva, is one of the organizations that promote governments' awareness of the need to prepare for natural disasters, from wildfires to storms and droughts.

Climate experts are surprised and concerned about the US government decision to release the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Fourth Assessment Report, a politically sensitive report, when it is still in draft form.
