New Madrid in motion
Article Abstract:
The New Madrid seismic zone lying 50-200 km from Memphis, Tennessee, experienced the most devastating earthquake in 1811 and 1812 that estimated a magnitude of 7.4-8.1. From high-precision Global Positioning System (GPS) measurements, made with a newly installed network of field stations, scientists conclude that the New Madrid seismic zone is rapidly deforming at rates of the same order of magnitude as those at the boundaries of tectonic plates.

Insight into the 2004 Sumatra-Andaman earthquake from GPS measurements in Southeast Asia
Article Abstract:
A demonstration that the rupture for the 26 December 2004 Sumatra-Andaman earthquake was at least 1,000 km long and that non-homogeneous slip is required to fit the large displacement gradients revealed by the Global Positioning System (GPS) measurements is presented. Kinematic analysis of the GPS recordings indicate that the centroid of released deformation is located at least 200 km north of the seismological epicentre.

Space geodetic evidence for rapid strain rates in the New Madrid seismic zone of central USA
Article Abstract:
Direct evidence for rapid strain rates in the New Madrid seismic zone of Central USA determined from a continuously operated global positioning system (GPS) network is presented. Rates of strain are of the order of 10(super -7) per year, comparable in magnitude to those across active plate boundaries, and are consistent with known active faults within the region.
