New designs in cholesteric colour
Article Abstract:
Cholesteric liquid crystals have been used in paint and ink technologies, thermal imaging and flat-panel displays. Tamaoki et al describe a technique that they have developed for using thin cholesteric films for rewritable recording of full-color images. Their material could be laser-addressed which would allow full color imgages of high resolution on films of solid cholesteric glass. This could be used for storing optical data. Optical elements could also be developed for high-power laser systems.

Lasing from a molecular sieve
Article Abstract:
Organic dye lasers have high output powers and broad tunability. Vietze and co-workers have described another type of organic laser where the organic molecule is within the microscopic pores of a zeolite rather than suspended in solution. They have shown that dipolar dye molecules of 1-ethyl-4-(4-(p-dimethyl-aminophenyl)-1,3-butadienyl)-pyridinium Perchlorat can be placed into the pores of the AIP0(sub4)-5 molecular sieve during the zeolite synthesis.

Colour-blind camouflage
Article Abstract:
Cuttlefish produce disruptive patterns in their skin in response to intensity variation. They respond to changes in light intensities but are unaffected by changes in wavelength. This shows that the cephalopods are color blind. The neurally controlled chromatophores control the camouflage responses. The results of an experiment with cuttlefish exposed to different color combinations are discussed.
