New, greener ethos bolsters bill to protect Californian desert
Article Abstract:
The 17-year effort of environmental groups groups to protect the Mojave and Sonoran deserts in California seems to be succeeding as Interior Sec Bruce Babbitt announced that the Clinton Administration has pledged to preserve California's deserts. The California Desert Protection Act, which was introduced by California's two Democratic senators and is expected to pass in 1993, will turn large areas of the deserts into national parks and put an end to existing mining, cattle, off-road vehicle use and military practices. The costs of the proposed environmental legislation in terms of jobs and revenues are presented.

US shows good faith on help for developing countries
Article Abstract:
The US continues to show a new attitude to global environmental problems. At the UN Commission on Sustainable Development's first session, Pres Clinton's administration announced an environmental technology transfer policy with Colombia. The move is partly symbolic, but the White House has also now signed the biodiversity treaty, pledged $100 million for international population control and promised stricter emissions controls.

Supreme Court ruling receives warm welcome
Article Abstract:
The standard of the scientific testimony presented in courts will improve with the US Supreme Court decision to make judges responsible for their reliability. This verdict is applicable only to federal courts, and will increase their work by adding to the number of pending cases. Judges can cope with the additional responsibility only through professional assistance.
