New head of NEC research institute in US hopes to change our view of computers

C. William Gear has been appointed director of the NEC Research Institute in Princeton, New Jersey. While most US and Japanese companies have been spending less on basic research, NEC is funding its Research Institute generously, with no demand for commercial applications from its researchers. Gear believes that stable funding is required for scientists to make bold conjectures without worrying about justifying every expenditure.

Towards new standards in university-industry collaboration

There is growing collaboration between US firms and universities, with 10% of all academic funds now being supplied by industry, according to a report from the Business-Higher Education Forum. The report raises a number of significant issues, including background rights.

Industrial "R" up in a downturn

Issues concerning research funding are discussed. In particular it is argued that during an economic downturn continued funding is vitally important to keep up the flow of innovation.
