Nuclear triggers get subcritical scrutiny
Article Abstract:
Researchers aim to study how plutonium triggers behave in nuclear weapons by conducting small underground explosions at the Nevada Test Site, but the experiments are being delayed by legal actions against the Science-based Stockpile Stewardship (SBSS) initiative. Critics question the safety of the subscritical experiments, but supporters claim the tests comply with the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty and yield no measurable fission levels. The first experiment, Rebound, will provide data for the new SBSS weapons code, and the following experiment, Holog, will analyze plutonium's surface behaviour.

Research 'could still result in nuclear arms', warns experts
Article Abstract:
Some nuclear weapons research being undertaken in Russian and US laboratories could lead to dangerous new weapons being developed, such as pure fusion weapons, according to several US weapons scientists. Lawrence Livermore laboratory in California and Los Alamos laboratory in New Mexico have denied they are developing new types of nuclear weapons, and experts at Livermore are sceptical about the potential of pure fusion weapons.

Lab rejects report that nuclear dump 'could explode.'
Article Abstract:
The Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico has released peer review reports that counter allegations by its scientists that radioactive explosions could result from a planned underground nuclear waste repository. These reports are aimed to appease public fears based on these allegations.
