Nuclear waste programme under fire for 'incoherence'
Article Abstract:
France's nuclear waste program, established by a 1991 law, does not have any coherent research program for nuclear waste disposal. Disposing of waste from France's 55 nuclear reactors is postponed to the year 2006, to give time for researchers to find a safe method for waste disposal. There is no solution in sight due to a lack of coordination between various research bodies and the government's focus on current technology, discouraging innovative research. The government may be forced to postpone waste disposal plans beyond 2006.

New French government aims to boost research job prospects
Article Abstract:
France's new Socialist government is likely to include initiatives to create more job opportunities for young researchers in its science policy. Public research organizations have undertaken very little recruitment over recent years, and the government aims to reverse this trend. This will play a key role in ensuring that research staff who retire are replaced. However, the government's science policy is likely to be restricted by the need to remain within strict public spending targets.

French sceintists offered time to set up companies
Article Abstract:
French researchers in public research agencies and universities will be provided with sabbatical leave of up to six years to establish their own companies. The move is part of a range of measures in a bill on innovation and research. The ban on scientists holding shares of sitting on boards of companies in which they have an interest, will also be lifted. Researchers will be encouraged to maintain links with their original laboratory.
