Oil biodegradation around roots
Article Abstract:
Certain desert plant species of the family Compositae appear to be able to biodegrade oil that saturates the soil of some parts of the Kuwaiti desert. These plants had clean roots despite the soil's condition, indicated that aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons are quickly metabolized. The same result was found in laboratory samples with only a 25% to 30% reduction in height compared to the optimum. These plant's root microflora may help reclaim portions of desert that have been contaminated with oil.

Eminent Victorians and science at the grass roots
Article Abstract:
The Rothamsted Experimental Station celebrates the 150th anniversary of its foundation in 1993. The research institute was founded by John Lawes and Henry Gilbert on Jun 1, 1843, as a center for serious agricultural research. The institute served as impetus to R.A. Fisher's revolution in statistical methods, F.C. Bawden's and N.W. Pirie's work on the tobacco mosaic virus and the discovery of pyrethroid insecticides. It is also famous for its long-term, continuous agricultural experiments.
