On the meaning of alarm calls: functional reference in an avian vocal system
Article Abstract:
Male chickens respond differently to predator stimuli. Raptors, for example, elicit different responses than do terrestrial predators. Hens respond differently to playbacks of these alarm calls: They responded to aerial alarm calls by crouching or running for cover, but ground alarm calls elicited an erect posture. Though visual clues appear to supplement information from alarm calls, hens can choose appropriate responses to predators from information in the alarm calls alone.

Chicken food calls are functionally referential
Article Abstract:
Many animals, including birds, produce distinctive vocal calls when they find food and it is thought that such vocalization may have important functional consequences. A new study investigates the type of information contained within the food-associated vocal calls of chicken. It is suggested that chicken food calls provide conspecifics with information about the presence of food, a property not previously demonstrated in any natural system of food-associated vocalization.
