Biotechnology leads the way as state moves beyond ground-based economy
Article Abstract:
Entrepreneurs and government officials in Texas are promoting biotechnology as a means of reviving the state's economy by moving away from traditional dependence on such industries as oil and ranching. The Houston area is at the forefront of this effort since it already boasts of 25 biotechnology companies and the huge Texas Medical Center. Entrepreneur George Mitchell and his firm, Woodlands Venture Capital Co, are supplying the investment funds that the Texas biotechnology industry lacked until now. The next crucial step is for the industry to develop and market a profitable drug.
