Paternity and paternal behaviour in the red-winged blackbird, Agelaius phoeniceus
Article Abstract:
A study of the relationship between paternity and paternal behavior in an eastern population of red-winged blackbirds during the four seasons shows that paternity does not influence paternal behavior. This result is suggested by the male provisioning of individual broods identically, despite the paternity of males in that brood. The level of provisioning by males with low paternity over several nests is the same as that of males with high paternity.

Response to playback of nestling begging in the red-winged blackbird, Agelaius phoeniceus
Article Abstract:
Nestling birds may beg to coerce additional food from providers, and providers respond with an increase in feeding. Begging calls of nestlings of red-winged blackbirds were recorded and played back to determine whether male and female adults increased feeding rates in response. Both increased their rates of feeding after playback of five minutes, suggesting that begging is the basis for short-term adjustments in feeding rates.

Red-winged blackbird females fail to increase feeding in response to begging call playbacks
Article Abstract:
The response of red-winged blackbird parents to increased begging calls from young broods was studied. The recorded begging calls were played back, and parental responses to playbacks at nests containing older broods were also studied. Parents did not respond with significant increases in feeding rates in either case, in contrast to similar studies that did demonstrate increased feeding with playbacks of begging calls.
