Perceptions of Germany unveiled
Article Abstract:
Only a small percentages of fellows in the EU's Training and Mobility of Researchers and its predecessor program applied to do research in Germany. A survey named language, bureaucracy, hostility towards foreigners and poor images of Germans as the main reasons. Germany's academic environment needs improvement to make it conducive for research and training. At the same time European scientists must shed their historically rooted prejudices and suspicions against Germany to benefit from the scientifically rich infrastructure of the country.

Lower Palaeolithic hunting spears from Germany
Article Abstract:
Well-preserved wooden throwing spears estimated to be around 400,000 years old were found in a coal mine in Schoningen, Germany, in 1995. The tools are believed to be the oldest complete hunting tools discovered to date, predating the 'spear' found in Lower Saxony which is placed at around 125 kyr old. The Schoningen spears suggest that the behavioral repertoire of pre-modern hominids included hunting the required foresight, planning and the use of appropriate tools.

A lower jaw from a Cretaceous parrot
Article Abstract:
Cretaceous bird fossils of the modern higher taxa are from the aquatic Anseriforme, Gaviiforme, Charadriiforme and Procellariiforme groups. A toothless avian jawbone from the latest Cretaceous of Wyoming is described, thought to be the oldest known parrot and the first known fossil of a terrestrial modern Cretaceous bird. The left and right dentaries are completely fused and the labial surface of the mandibular symphysis is highly vascularized in appearance.
