Performance of Bos indicus-influenced bulls in serving capacity tests and multiple-sire breeding groups
Article Abstract:
Factors affecting copulatory activity and fertility of Bos indicus-influenced bulls were assessed. Majority of the 14- to 16-month old bulls had poor performance in serving capacity tests as compared to 20-month old bulls. There were increased number of mounts, intromissions and ejaculations when bulls were exposed to heifers with Syncro-Mate B-induced estrous, in F1 crossbreeds of Gelbvieh x Santa Gertrudis (SG) or Red Angus x SG, and in bulls tested on test day 2. Morever, bulls with low serving capacity did not affect herd fertility when they were included in multiple sire situations.

Fetal development in cattle with multiple ovulations
Article Abstract:
Cattle were treated to produce multiple ovulations, then mated in order to study factors related to fetal development in multiple gestations. Ovulation rates above two carried increased incidences of abortion, and the death of one fetus in a fused placental unit appeared to cause the death of the others in that unit. Bovines are therefore postulated to have a mechanism for limiting the number of viable fetuses. The optimal ovulation rate for increased productivity was two. Estrone assays to diagnose multiple gestation were found unreliable.
