Photocontrolled nanophase segregation in a liquid-crystal solvent
Article Abstract:
Three separate molecular-dynamics simulations have been undertaken to assess the microscopic origins of the observed photomechanical response of mixtures of 7AB, an azobenzene derivative which is a photoactive solute. It has been established that the positional ordering of 7AB in a smectic host depends sensitively on its photochemical state. There was a marked fall in ferroelectric polarization density on exposure to UV radiation, and this research shows that switching driven by a photochemical process is possible in such materials. It has been possible to demonstrate nanoscale photocontrol of the positional distribution of a photoactive solute in a smectic medium.

Surface-aligned reaction of photogenerated oxygen atoms with carbon monoxide targets
Article Abstract:
It has been possible to schematically demonstrate in a two-dimensional model the geometrical factors involved in the surface-aligned photochemical (SAP) effect. Research undertaken on two stepped platinum single crystals indicates that the oxidation rate at step sites is twice the oxidation rate at terrace sites. It appears that the relative rate of the photo-oxidation reaction is not affected by CO availability, with most of the reactive O atoms generated finding a CO molecule on either step or terrace sites.
