Photosynthetic microbial mats in the 3,416-Myr-old ocean
Article Abstract:
The results of a field, petrographic and geochemical study testing the hypotheses for the 3,416-Myr-old Buck Reef Chert, South Africa are presented. It is shown that most carbonaceous matter was formed by photosynthetic mats within the euphotic zone and distributed as detrital matter by waves and currents to surrounding environments. It is concluded that photosynthetic organisms had evolved and were living in a stratified ocean supersaturated in dissolved silica 3,416 Myr ago.

Natural engineering principles of electron tunnelling in biological oxidation-reduction
Article Abstract:
Proteins with known atomic structure whose action involves electron transfer were surveyed. Transfer over longer distances involved a chain of cofactors. Tunnelling of electrons can proceed at rates fare faster than the substrate redox reactions it supports, Tunnelling enables sequential electron transfer in catalytic sites.

Reversible redox energy coupling in electron transfer chains
Article Abstract:
Reversibility includes the intensely studied cytochrome bc1, which catalyses electron transfer between quinone and cytochrome c. Cytochrome bc1 reversibility is investigated using photosynthetic membranes of the bacterium Rhodobacter capsulatus.
