Physicists warm to French strategy on nuclear tests
Article Abstract:
Physicist Richard Garwin, at the French Physics Assn meeting in Paris, France in Sep 1995, held that the French decision to resume nuclear testing helped force France into supporting a zero-yield nuclear ban. The public outcry was so strong that French Pres Jacques Chirac announced his support for the zero-yield ban and already the US and United Kingdom have joined in supporting the zero-yield ban despite previous support for limited-yield testing. Therefore, the decision to resume tests may have been the final move necessary to force nuclear powers into the zero-yield plan.

Boost for French universities following student protests
Article Abstract:
The French government's decision to concede to the major demands of agitating university students has helped restore the flagging morale of French universities. The government has agreed to provide substantial financial assistance of US$800 million and to create 4,000 more staff vacancies in 1996. A white paper on the future of French universities is also being prepared. Skeptics say that the government was forced to concede to the demands in order to prevent the ongoing public sector employees' strike from gaining momentum.

French research budget wins increase, but few new posts
Article Abstract:
France's 1996 budget is stringent in an attempt to bring its deficit within the limits for Europe's Economic and Monetary Union but new Secretary of State for Research Elisabeth Dufourcq was able to win a 2.4% increase in research spending. These funds will help resolve the financial crisis created when the federal budget promised funds that it never distributed. However, only eight new research posts are funded in 1996. The Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique will be a main beneficiary with a 3.66% increase.
