Picosecond discharges and stick-slip friction at a moving meniscus of mercury on glass
Article Abstract:
Bernoulli demonstrated in 1700 that light was generated by swirling mercury in an evacuated flask. The phenomenon is reviewed and it is found that the collective picosecond transfer of large numbers of electrons accompanies the repetitive emission of light from mercury moving over glass. The glass acquires a net charge in contact with mercury, and the separation provides a force that drags mercury against gravity to the direction of the motion of the glass.

Mechanical detection of magnetic resonance
Article Abstract:
Magnetic resonance can be converted to angstrom-scale mechanical oscillations when a microscopic sample of paramagnetic material is placed in an inhomogeneous magnetic field. The sample is mounted on a cantilever, and optical measurement of its vibrations give the oscillatory magnetic force on the sample. This technique has the potential for achieving atomic-scale resolution in three dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance imaging.

Single spin detection by magnetic resonance force microscopy
Article Abstract:
Magnetic resonance force microscopy (MRFM) is proposed as a means to improve the detection sensibility to the single spin level and enable three-dimensional imaging of macromolecules with atomic resolution. The detection of an individual electron spin by the MRFM is reported.
