Pig heart transplant 'breakthrough' stirs debate over timing of trials
Article Abstract:
A British biotechnology company successfully transplanted a pig heart into humans by breeding a transgenic pig whose organs can inhibit the action of a key protein responsible for transplant rejection. This successful development of a technique for mitigating the major problems in xenotransplantation is appreciated by researchers but they are concerned that the technique is not ready for human trials. The transplantation of animal organs also receives strong opposition from the animal welfare groups.

GM debate must go global, says meeting...
Article Abstract:
Key scientists at a meeting arranged by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) have called for a permanent international forum to be established to assess the scientific and social implications of genetically modified (GM) foods. A leading candidate to set up a international panel is the OECD itself, but there are concerns that the OECD's activities could be seen as reflecting the views of the industrial community.

Royal Society plans genetics meeting with actuarial profession
Article Abstract:
The integration of genetic information into the health insurance industry's risk assessments is controversial and so the Royal Society of Britain is planning a meeting with actuarial professionals to explore the issues. The issue of genetic screening creates links between the science and financial communities while city investors need to be aware of the economic influence of technology, science and engineering.
