Plastic plasticity
Article Abstract:
The analysis of a simple neural system in the Aplysia mollusc is described by Fischer and colleagues. It is shown that related types of synaptic plasticity, known as augmentation and post-tetanic potentiation (augmentation/PTP), can be suppressed through the activation of a further modulatory pathway. In the research, the metaplasticity is related to the behaviour of an animal, using a well described circuit, mediating a defensive siphon-withdrawal reflex in the Aplysia mollusc.

Metaplasticity at identified inhibitory synapses in Aplysia
Article Abstract:
There are several examples in which synaptic plasticity is modulated. The question of possible advantages in regulating the intrinsic plastic properties of a synapse is raised. This can be examined in the neural circuit in Aplysia, mediating the siphon withdrawal reflex. It is reported that tail shock leads to differential metaplasticity, attenuating its ability for short-term synaptic enhancement following pre-synaptic activation.

Sensory experience modifies the short-term dynamics of neocortical synapses
Article Abstract:
Sensory stimuli in the neocortex are often arranged as topographic maps, and they show experience-dependent plasticity. A brain slice preparation involving rate whisker barrel cortex in vitro was developed. Sensory deprivation was found to alter short-term synaptic dynamics in both vertical and horizontal excitatory pathways. Changes in the vertical inputs are amplified by modifications of horizontal pathways.
