Predation risks for nesting birds in fragmented coast redwood forest

Article Abstract:

Bird nests situated next to prairie edge have substantially higher rates of predation than nests next to suburbs, young forests, roads or rivers. This research, undertaken in redwood forest patches in Humboldt County, CA, aimed to assess whether the probability of nest predation was connected with distance from the forest edge, time of season, nest type, concealment and type of surrounding habitat. This research gives an overall indication of the predation edge effect in mature and old-growth coast redwood forests. Possible edge effects should be taken into account when planning for the conservation of bird species that may be vulnerable to increased predation close to edges.

Raccoon predation on ancient murrelets on East Limestone Island, British Columbia

Article Abstract:

Predation of breeding seabirds by introduced mammals has already caused the extinction of the Guadalupe storm petrel. The threat posed by introduced raccoons on the Queen Charlotte Islands, British Columbia, to native, ancient murrelets, is evaluated. Fresh evidence of predation by raccoons was found, supported by altered levels of predation. This represents an internationally significant conservation threat, as the Queen Charlotte Islands hold most of the global ancient murrelet population.

Mountain lion predation of Bighorn Sheep in the Peninsular Ranges, California

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning the year round mortality of 113 Bighorn Sheep which had been radiocollared in the Peninsular Ranges, CA. Mountain Lion predation accounted for 69% of the total mortality.
